The Role of the State Senate
The New York State Senate, along with the State Assembly, forms the bicameral New York State Legislature. The Senate consists of 63 members, each representing approximately 320,000 constituents. Senators serve two-year terms with no term limits.
State Senators are responsible for drafting and voting on state legislation, approving the state budget, confirming gubernatorial appointments, and addressing the needs of their local constituents. The Senate Majority Leader controls the legislative calendar and committee assignments.
